Ganesh Chaturthi in India 2023: Date, History, Facts about Lord Ganesha

Sankashti Chaturthi 2023: Hindus commemorate Sankashti Chaturthi, also known as Sankatahara Chaturthi in several southern Indian regions, as an auspicious occasion honouring Lord Ganesha.

Every month in the Hindu Calendar, it is observed on the fourth day, or “chaturthi,” of the Krishna Paksha, which is the waning phase of the moon. In addition, Sankashti Chaturthi on a Tuesday is known as “Angarki Chaturthi” and is regarded as the luckiest of all the Sankashti Chaturthi days.

Sankashti Chaturthi 2023 is on Thursday, November 30, 2023

Chaturthi Sankashti Timing of November 30, 2023, 2:25 p.m. to December 1, 3:31 p.m.

Celebrations

The event is widely observed in both the northern and southern regions of India. Maharashtra is a place where the celebrations are even more lavish and magnificent. The Sanskrit term “sankashti” denotes “deliverance during difficult times,” while the word “chaturthi” signifies “fourth day or the day of Lord Ganesha.” Devotees worship Lord Ganesha on this auspicious day in order to assist them in overcoming all life’s challenges and emerging triumphant in every trying circumstance.

Sankashti Chaturthi Rituals

Devotees up early on Sankashti Chaturthi day and spend the entire day worshipping Lord Ganesha. In observance of their deity, they keep a stringent fast. A partial fast can also be maintained by some people. The only food allowed to those who observe this fast is fruits, vegetables, and plant roots. On this day in India, peanuts, potatoes, and sabudana khichadi are staple foods.

After seeing the moon, the Sankashti puja is performed in the evening. Fresh flowers and Durva grass adorn the idol of Lord Ganesha.  There are also the customary puja rituals of lighting incense and reciting the Vedic mantras. Following this, the followers read the month-specific “vrat katha.” Only after evening devotion of Lord Ganesha and moon sighting is the fast broken.

As a gift, a special “naivedya” made of modaks and other of Lord Ganesha’s favourite foods is made. An “aarti” comes next, and then everyone who is devoted receives the prasad.

Special puja ceremonies honouring the Moon or Chandra God are also held on the day of Sankashti Chaturthi. This entails scattering flowers, consecrated rice, chandan (sandalwood) paste, and water in the moon’s direction.

Reciting the “Ganesha Ashtothra,” “Sankashtnashana sthothra,” and “Vakrathunda Mahakaya,” to mention a few, is lucky on this day. You can actually recite any other Vedic mantra that is devoted to Lord Ganesha.

Sankashti Chaturthi Significance

Seeing the moon has particular meaning on the holy day of Sankashti Chaturthi. Lord Ganesha’s devoted followers think that if they worship to their god with devotion, especially on the day of Angarki Chaturthi, all their wishes would come true and they will have a wealthy life. In order to be blessed with children, childless couples also observe the Sankashti Chaturthi vrat.

Since Sankashti Chaturthi is celebrated in every lunar month, God Ganesha is worshipped under a different name and with a different peeta (petals from lotuses) each month. There are thirteen vrats in all, called “vrat katha” since each one has a distinct function and narrative. Consequently, there are thirteen “vrat katha” in total—one for each month—with the final katha being dedicated to “adika,” the extra month that occurs once every four years according to the Hindu calendar.

Every month has a different vrat narrative, which is only recounted throughout that month. According to Hindu mythology, on this auspicious day, Lord Shiva proclaimed that His son, Sankashti, or Lord Ganesha, was superior to all other gods, with the exception of Vishnu, Lakshmi, and Parvati.

Lord Sankashti is revered as the god of wealth, luck, and freedom from that point on. It is thought that Lord Ganesha grants His presence on Earth to all of His devotees on the day of Sankashti Chaturthi. The Bhavishaya and Narasimha Puras both discuss the significance of the Sankashti Chaturthi vrat. Lord Krishna himself also gave Yudhishtira, the eldest Pandava, an explanation of the vrat’s meaning.
