This auspicious occasion occurs on the fourth day (Chaturthi) of the Hindu lunar month's Krishna Paksha
Sankashti Chaturthi July 2023: Sankashti Chaturthi is a significant Hindu festival celebrated in honour of Lord Ganesha, the elephant-headed deity venerated as the remover of obstacles and herald of good fortune. This auspicious occasion occurs on the fourth day (Chaturthi) of the Hindu lunar month’s Krishna Paksha (waxing phase of the moon).
“Sankashti” is derived from two words: “San” meaning “deliverance” and “Kashti” meaning “problems.” Consequently, Sankashti Chaturthi is celebrated to seek Lord Ganesha’s blessings for the removal of obstacles and difficulties from one’s existence.
Devotees believe that if they worship Lord Ganesha on this day with devotion and carry out the prescribed rituals, they will be able to surmount obstacles and achieve success and prosperity.

The Sankashti Chaturthi rituals begin with a strict fast that begins at sunrise and lasts until the moon is sighted in the evening. As a sign of respect and devotion to Lord Ganesha, devotees refrain from consuming any food or water during this period. It is believed that observing this fast with sincerity and discipline pleases the deity, who then blesses the devotees.
Evening is the time when devotees assemble in temples or their homes to worship Lord Ganesha. They embellish a special altar or shrine with fruits, flowers, and traditional offerings. Lord Ganesha’s primary image or idol is deposited on the altar, and aarti (ceremonial prayer) is performed to invoke his divine presence. The devotees recite chants and hymns dedicated to Lord Ganesha with devotion and seek his blessings for the well-being of their families, the elimination of obstacles, and the fulfilment of their desires.
The appearance of the moon marks the culmination of Sankashti Chaturthi rituals. Devotees anxiously await the rising of the moon, at which time they offer prayers and thanks to Lord Ganesha for his divine grace. After the moon is sighted, they break their fast and consume a simple supper that is frequently prepared with Lord Ganesha’s favourite foods.
Sankashti Chaturthi is observed not only by individuals seeking personal blessings, but also by groups and communities. In temples, special prayers and cultural events are organised, where devotees gather to perform devotional songs, share tales of Lord Ganesha’s glory, and engage in spiritual discourses. This festival functions as a unifying force, fostering among the devotees a sense of shared faith and devotion.
The significance of Sankashti Chaturthi rests in its emphasis on seeking Lord Ganesha’s blessings to overcome life’s obstacles and difficulties. It is believed that devotees can attain spiritual growth, inner fortitude, and success by observing this festival with sincerity and devotion. Sankashti Chaturthi is a reminder of the power of faith and the divine’s beneficence, inspiring devotees to confront life’s obstacles with resolve and optimism.
