Sant Kabir Jayanti is observed in India on the full moon of the Hindu month of Jyeshtha, which falls between the Gregorian months of May and June. This year’s date is June 4. Sant Kabir Das was an Indian mystic poet and religious figure who lived in the 15th century. His birth commemoration is known as Jayanti. Sant Kabir Jayanti is a day commemorating him, his works, and his enduring legacy.
Kabir Saheb was born in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh, on the day of the full moon during the Hindu month of Jyeshthah in 1398. Raised by a family of weavers, he went on to become a famous mystic poet who was persecuted by Muslims and Hindus, who attempted to claim him as their own upon his death, for his work. Kabir, unlike other Gurus and Saints of his time, led a simple life as a weaver. He married and fathered offspring.
The majority of Kabir’s poems are documented in Hindi. They reveal various facets of existence and demand devotion to God. During his lifetime, Kabir frequently criticised particular religious practises, causing controversy. Sant Kabir was compelled into exile in 1495 after Emperor Sikandar Lodi accused him of possessing divine powers. In 1518, he passed away in Maghar near Gorakhpur.
Sant Kabir’s legacy has flourished in addition to surviving. Path of Kabir is a religious community that claims him as one of its founders and sages. Over the course of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, the membership of the group known as Panthis grew to approximately 9.6 million individuals.
His work was included in a spiritual book titled “Kabir Bijak” in the 17th century, after being composed orally for the first time. Some of Kabir’s verses and teachings have been included in religious texts. Rabindranath Tagore, a renowned Bengali polymath, translated Kabir’s poetry into English in 1915, exposing it to a larger audience. In Benares, there are currently two temples dedicated to Kabir. One is maintained by Hindus, and the other by Muslims.
There is ambiguity surrounding Saint Kabir’s birth and death, but it is believed he lived for 120 years.
Shabnam Virmani, a documentary filmmaker, has produced a series of documentaries and novels depicting Kabir’s philosophy.
“Kabir Bijak” is regarded as the most remarkable poem in “Kabir Das,” a collection of verses that illuminate the meaning of existence.
Saint Kabir rejected the prevalent Hindu and Islamic rituals of his time.
The centre of his life and teachings was Varanasi.
