Saune Sankranti, observed on the 16th of July, is a holiday. This country is home to numerous castes, ethnic groups, and religious sects, each with its own culture and traditions. Thus, Nepalese festivals can be categorised as religious celebrations, social gatherings, and national festivities. There are three geographical regions in Nepal: mountains, hills, and terrain. Each of these regions observes a distinct collection of religious holidays.
On Saune Sankranti, the first day of the month of Shrawan, Hindus perform special pujas at Shiva temples. This day’s most important ritual is Shiva Abhishekam (Palabhishekam). During Shrawan Sankranti, the sun enters Cancer. During Shrawan, it is considered essential to worship Lord Shiva. According to Nepalese tradition, Shrawan is the month of cleansing and removing dirt. In order to cure diseases such as eczema, Nepalese people venerate and beat ‘Nonglo’ bamboo plates made of enormous size.
Nepalese have a custom of naming their daughters after marriage in their hometowns. They are also served an assortment of delectable cuisines and sweets. Throughout the month, married women wear a symbol of good fortune (green and yellow bracelets, clothing, etc.).
According to mythology, Samudra Manthan (the roiling of the oceans) took place in the month of Shravan. During the Samudra Manthan, 14 distinct varieties of rubies appeared, of which 13 were distributed to demons, leaving the Halahal (poison) variety. Lord Shiva arrived to save the day, ingests Halahal, and stores it in his neck. As a consequence of the poison, his throat turned blue, earning him the moniker ‘Neelkantha’ (meaning ‘blue throat’). Lord Shiva wore a crescent moon on his cranium to reduce the poison’s potency. Consequently, all the gods began to offer Ganges water to Lord Shiva in an effort to mitigate the poison’s effects.
Since then, Shiva devotees have offered Ganges water at Shrawan in the hopes of amassing vast quantities of Punya. During the month of Shrawan, devotees are permitted to: ‘Rudrabhisheks’ Monday fasting, the donning of Rudraksha, and the recitation of the Shiva Chalisa and Aarti.
