Synaxis of the Mother of God Day 2023: Greece observes the Synaxis of the Mother of God as a national holiday on December 26 each year. The mother of Jesus Christ, the main figure in Christianity, the Virgin Mary, is honored on this day according to the Orthodox Church. Christians refer to Jesus as God, which is why Mary is dubbed the Mother of God. Mary is therefore revered for her part in the birth of Jesus, who came into the world to cleanse humanity of sin.
The Synaxis of the Mother of God’s History
A synaxis, according to the Orthodox Church, is an event held in honor of a notable person. This time, it’s in observance of Mary’s title, “Theotokos,” which means “God-Bearer.” Every significant feast day in the Orthodox Church is devoted to honoring a person who contributed to the creation of the occasion being commemorated.
The fourth century is when the Synaxis of the Mother of God, or “Sinaxis Yperagias Theotokou Marias” as it is known in Greek, first appeared. Jesus’ mother, Mary, often known as the Virgin Mary, is revered as the Son of God. The Christian Bible’s New Testament books contain accounts of Mary’s life.
Mary was a native of the Israelite town of Nazareth, according to the Gospel of Luke. She was betrothed to a man named Joseph and was a virgin. While she was still in Nazareth, an angel of God visited her and informed her that she would receive the Holy Spirit’s protection and that she would conceive and give birth to a son who would atone for the sins of the Israelites. Jesus was to be the name of the son.
Despite being a virgin, Mary became pregnant. Joseph, her fiancé, made the decision to discreetly call off the engagement in order to spare Mary embarrassment. However, before he could act, a divine angel also showed up to him and told him that Mary was the mother of the child and that he should go with marrying her.
Jesus was born into Mary’s womb on schedule. She watched her son’s crucifixion by the Roman authorities and stayed at his side till his death. She continued to be a devoted disciple of Jesus when he rose from the grave and ascended to heaven, and she maintained contact with the other disciples of Jesus.
