Thaipusam 2023: This year, Thaipusam is observed on February 5 during the full moon in the Tamil month of Thai, which occurs in January or February. It’s a time to ask Lord Murugan, the son of Lord Shiva, for good health, prosperity, and forgiveness in the new year. Did you know that the word ‘Thaipusam’ is a combination of two Tamil words, ‘Thai,’ one of the Tamil months, and ‘Pusam,’ which denotes the Pusam Nakshatram (Star)? The festival celebrates Parvati’s gift of a spear to Murugan so that he could defeat the evil Soorapadman. Let’s celebrate the victory of good over evil and cleanse our body with positiveness this Thaipusam.
Thaipusam is a grand and vibrant festival commemorating Lord Murugan’s victory over evil. The story behind this day’s significance is an intriguing one. According to the Hindu mythological text “Skanda Purana,” Soorapadman was an Asura. He grew so powerful that they couldn’t defeat him, even with the combined effort of all the devas. In a dire attempt to save the universe, they sought the help of Lord Shiva, who gave birth to Lord Murugan with his divine powers.
Lord Murugan’s mother, Parvathi, gave her son the divine spear Vel, which has the power to vanquish evil. Lord Murugan headed to the battlefield and fought Soorapadman and defeated him with his Vel. On a peacock, he then appeared before his devotees. With the death of the Asura, the devas restored peace to the universe. Devotees began celebrating this day as Thaipusam.
Preparations of Thaipusam start weeks or even months in advance. The devotees condition their mind and body about a week before the festival by extensive praying and fasting. On the day of Thaipusam, devotees would perform various penitential acts, such as carrying a ‘kavadi’ (burden). Extreme methods of expressing gratitude to Lord Murugan include piercing the tongues, cheeks, and bodies of kavadi bearers with skewers, walking through burning coal, etc. Devotees believe that these devotional activities can cleanse them of their sins. They also believe that they will experience happiness, wealth, and good health throughout their lives.
