In the northern regions of India, especially among Hindu believers, Valmiki Jayanti is celebrated with considerable fervour.
Valmiki Jayanti 2023: Maharishi Valmiki, the author of the renowned Hindu epic Ramayana, celebrates his birth anniversary with the festival known as Valmiki Jayanti. It occurs on the full moon day of the Ashwin month in the Hindu calendar, which corresponds to September to October in the Gregorian calendar. Valmiki Jayanti, also known as Pragat Diwas, will be observed on October 28 (Saturday) in 2023.
According to legend, Maharishi Valmiki had a meeting with Lord Rama while he was in exile. Additionally, he gave Sita shelter after Lord Rama exiled her from the realm of Ayodhya. She gave birth to the twins Lava and Kusha in his ashram. The great sage became their teacher when they were young and taught them the Ramayana, which consists of 24,000 words (shlokas) and seven cantos (kandas).
Another widely held notion holds that Ratnakar, the name of Valmiki’s early alter ego, was a highway dacoit. Before meeting Narad Muni, who turned him into a devoted follower of Lord Rama, he used to rob and kill people. Years of contemplation later, a supernatural voice pronounced his penance effective and gave him the name Valmiki. Because he was the earliest poet in Sanskrit literature, he became known as Adi Kavi in later times. Hindu worshippers continue to recite his writings, particularly the vast epic.
Valmiki’s birthdate and time of birth are unclear, however it is thought that he was born around 500 BC.
