Vat Purnima Vrat is observed to venerate Savitri, the goddess. This festival is primarily observed in Maharashtra, Gujarat, and other regions of southern India. Hindus For the longevity of their spouses, married women observe a stringent fast and seek the blessings of Goddess Savitri. According to Hindu scriptures, women offer prayers to the Banyan tree, also known as Vat Vriksha, which is believed to be the longest-living tree and where Lord Shiva, Lord Vishnu, and Lord Brahma (the Trinity) reside. Vat Vriksha is also referred to as Akshay Vat because of its immortality. In Sanatan Dharma, praying to this tree is regarded as incredibly auspicious.
According to Hindu scriptures, it is believed that Savitri married the short-lived Satyavaan. One day, while Satyavaan was working in the forest, Yamraaj, the lord of death, arrived to claim his life. After some time, Savitri discovered her spouse deceased in the forest, where she encounters Yamraj. She began to pursue him and begged for her husband’s life, but Yamraj refused. Yamraj requested that she return, but she refused again.
Then Yamraj asked her for three boons; she requested her father-in-law’s eyesight, the return of her father-in-law’s vanished kingdom, and to become the mother of one hundred sons. Yamraj granted her all three boons before departing, but he did not exit her husband’s life just yet. Savitri began following him once more, at which point Yamraj remarked that he had granted all the desired boons, but why was she following him again? Savitri replied that she could not become the mother of 100 sons if her husband’s life was not granted. Yamraj accepted his defeat and gave Satyavaan his life back.
Women rise early in the morning and bathe prior to beginning devotional rituals. Wear traditional attire such as sarees and suits and accessorise with all the jewellery.
If it is the first Vat Purnima Vrat for a newlywed, her mother will give her a saree, ornaments, candies, and fruits.
Women visit the temple and pray to the tree by offering water, flowers, kumkum, akshat, and candies. They also perform parikrama (circumambulation) seven times and bind a white sacred thread known as Kacchaa Soot; if this thread is not available, mauli or kalava may be substituted. Recite the Savitri Vrat Katha (Story). One must give their mother-in-law traditional clothing and Dakshina and seek her blessings by caressing her feet.
