This is the ritual required to consecrate the Ganpati statue. After performing ‘Deep-Prajwalan’ and ‘Sankalpa,’ this is the first step that devotees take. Lord Ganesha is respectfully summoned with mantra recitation, and life is invoked within the pandal, temple, or home-based idol.
The next stage is the 16-step puja tradition, where’shodasha’ means 16 and ‘upachara’ means ‘devoutly offering the lord’ in Sanskrit.
The idol is then bathed in milk, ghee, honey, curd, and sugar (panchamrit snan), followed by perfumed oil and then ganga jal. Then, new clothing is presented (vastra, uttariya samarpan), alongside flowers, intact rice (Akshata), a garland, sindoor, and chandan. The deity is decorated and revered by offering modak, betel leaves, and coconut (naivedya), lighting incense sticks, diyas, chanting hymns and mantras, and lighting incense sticks.
This ritual is carried out prior to visarjan. People of all ages participate in the festival with tremendous enthusiasm and devotion. Whether in pandals, temples, or residences, Ganesha Chaturthi is celebrated with great joy. People sing and dance while setting off pyrotechnics. Ganesha is worshipped with the beautiful chant of mantras, aarti, and flowers to send farewell. The order of the phases is Niranjan aarti, Pushpanjali arpan, and Pradakshina.
This is the final ceremony in which the Ganesha statue is submerged in water. People can be heard chanting on their way to the immersion, “Ganapati Bappa Morya, Purchya Varshi Laukariya” (Hail Lord Ganpati, come swiftly next year). Notably, this Ganpati Visarjan is commemorated with great zeal in Mumbai and throughout the rest of Maharashtra.
