HOLIKA DAHAN 2023: PURNIMA TITHI

Purnima Tithi begins at 4:17 PM on March 6, 2023, and ends at 6:09 PM on March 7, 2023, on the day of Holika Dahan.

According To Scripture, Holika Dahan Rules

From the eighth day of the bright half of the month of Falgun to the full moon of Falgun, Holashtak is observed. During this eight-day period, all virtuous actions are prohibited. On the day of Purnima (full moon), the Holika Dahan bonfire ceremony is performed.

There are two primary guidelines for this ceremony:

On that day, Bhadra should not prevail. Vishti Karan, one of the eleven Karans, is an alternative name for Bhadra. 1 Karan is equivalent to half a Tithi.

The Purnima should reign supreme in the Pradosh Kaal. In other words, Purnima should persist for the next three Muhurats following sunset.

On the day following Holika Dahan (also known as Chhoti Holi), it is customary to play with colours with gusto and merriment. People apply paint to each other and then embrace.

How is Holi Dahan celebrated?

The festival begins on the night of the full moon. Fires are lit on street corners to cleanse the air of evil spirits and bad vibes, and to symbolize the destruction of the wicked Holika, after whom the festival was named.

Doljatra

In Odisha, Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal, Doljatra is celebrated instead of Holi. Essentially it is the same festival as Holi Dahan, but has added emphasis as it is the last festival of the Bengali year.
