What is Yorkshire pudding?

Yorkshire pudding is a dish made from batter consisting of eggs, flour, and milk or water. It is traditionally served with roast beef and gravy and is part of the traditional English Sunday lunch. The pudding originates from Yorkshire in northern England.

The history of Yorkshire pudding

The Yorkshire pudding is a traditional English dish made from batter and typically served with roast beef and gravy. The dish originated in the county of Yorkshire in the north of England, and its name derives from the fact that it was originally cooked in a pan placed under the meat while it roasted, to catch the drippings.

Yorkshire pudding was traditionally made with a mixture of eggs, flour, milk and beef dripping or suet, but modern recipes often omit the beef dripping or substitute it with vegetable oil. The pudding should be light and fluffy, with a crispy outer edge and a soft centre.

Yorkshire pudding can be served as a savoury dish or sweetened and served as a dessert. Sweet versions are often flavoured with fruit or chocolate, and served with cream or custard.

The dish is associated with comfort food and Sunday roasts, but can also be enjoyed as part of a more elaborate meal.
