Cabernet Franc Day 2023: Every year on December 4, people celebrate Cabernet Franc Day. We’re glad that this lovely wine is getting some attention for once. Everyone has a favorite wine, but if we could, we’d make every day Cabernet Franc Day. For too long, it has been forgotten in favor of the Cabernet Sauvignon. Did you know that sans Cabernet Franc, there would be no Cabernet Sauvignon? One reason we love it is because of that.
The history of Château François Day
First celebrated in 2015, it was also known as Cab Franc Day. Lori Budd of Dracaena Wines came up with the idea. Right now, people all over the world recognize it. Cardinal Richelieu’s love for a certain blue-black grape in southwest France in the 1600s was the start of it all. He cared about them so much that he brought vine cuttings from Bordeaux to the Loire Valley. Since then, the berry has been growing well there. Cabernet Franc is one of the most popular grapes grown around the world right now. On December 4, which is the date of Cardinal Richelieu’s death, we celebrate Cabernet Franc Day to honor his memory and show our love for the grape. Without his love for the grape, there would be no Cabernet Franc in the world.
That’s not all, though. There would be no Cabernet Sauvignon or Cabernet Franc without Cabernet Franc. According to DNA testing, Cabernet Sauvignon was “born” when Cabernet Franc and Sauvignon Blanc accidentally crossed. It is safe to say that Cabernet Franc is the parent wine of Cabernet Sauvignon. We love the good things that have come from this happy accident.
One of the top three grape types grown today for making wine is Cabernet Franc. It is possible to make wine out of it on its own or in combination with Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, as in Bordeaux. You can also make great ice wine from the grapes. Each sip of a Cabernet Franc wine tastes of herbs and spicy earthiness, with a delicate sweet-savory flavor. The wines also smell good, with strawberry, raspberry, cherry, and tomato red fruit scents. The wine is a great way to cool off because it has medium to high acidity. Cabernet Sauvignon has been the leader in the business for a long time. There it is, Cabernet Franc finally gets its day in the sun.
