Canadian Bacon Day 2023: Date, History, Facts, Activities

Evidence suggests that domestication of pigs began in China around 4900 BCE. However, it is believed that the Chinese did not begin salting pork bellies until 1500 BCE.

Every year on March 3, Canadian Bacon Day is celebrated, and we’re going to show you how to do so in style. Do you know that Canadian bacon has been around for more than two centuries? Canadian bacon differs slightly from its American equivalent.

Canadian bacon is made from the pig’s loin, whereas American bacon is primarily made from the pig’s belly. This bacon is also known as Peameal bacon in Canada. Canadian Bacon Day celebrates this delectable food, a popular breakfast item in the United States, Canada, and some European countries.

The background of Canadian Bacon Day

Evidence suggests that domestication of pigs began in China around 4900 BCE. However, it is believed that the Chinese did not begin salting pork bellies until 1500 BCE. In Europe and Asia, the breeding of pigs became increasingly prevalent over the centuries.

Bacon was quite popular in countries such as England, France, and Germany during the Middle Ages. During those times, bacon referred to anything made from pork or pork in general. In French, it was known as bacun, whereas in German, it was known as bacho.

Eventually, bacon spread throughout the world, and countries began developing their own variations. In Japan, it was known as bekon and was used in dishes such as yakitori. Australia, the United States, and Canada also had distinct bacon varieties.

In Canada, pork packers began slicing the pig’s loin instead of its fatty belly, as they do in the United States. One of them, William Davies of the William Davies company, began sending pork loins packed with yellow peas to his relatives in England.

He believed that keeping yellow peas would extend the shelf life of bacon. Supposedly, this is the origin of peameal bacon or Canadian bacon. Today, Canadian bacon or peameal bacon is a globally popular delicacy.

Since the 1960s, Peameal bacon sandwiches have been a major attraction for tourists visiting Canada or the United States. The origin of Canadian Bacon Day is unknown, but millions celebrate it to honour this tasty and meaty breakfast dish.
