Raw Spinach Day is annually observed on July 16 to highlight the numerous health benefits associated with raw spinach. Popeye gaining extraordinary strength after consuming his canned spinach is not a complete fabrication. Because spinach can actually improve your health. From enhancing bone health to reducing cancer risk, spinach has you covered. Fresh Spinach Day serves as a reminder to include this nutritious leafy vegetable in your dishes and smoothies. Creamed spinach, spinach fondue, sautéed spinach, and green smoothies are incredibly delicious.

The background of Fresh Spinach Day

It is believed that spinach originated in Persia and was introduced to India and China via Nepal in 647 A.D. – where it was known as “Persian green.” The Saracens then introduced spinach to Sicily in 827 A.D. In the late 12th century, the Arabs brought it to Spain, where it was known as “the king of leafy greens.” In the 14th century, it spread to England and France, where it was known as ‘the Spanish vegetable’ for a time. In the 1800s, spinach gained popularity in the United States. In the 1930s, spinach consumption increased owing to the popularity of Popeye.

The two primary varieties of spinach are flat-leaf and savoy. The leaves of flat-leaf or smooth-leaf spinach are flat and silky, hence the names. Typically, this variety is grown for preserving and canning. It grows more quickly, produces more, and is simpler to clean. In contrast, the savoy variety, with its curled and wrinkled leaves, is preferred for household gardens and fresh markets. It typically has a superior appearance, flavour, and shelf life than flat-leaf. In addition, it contains less oxalic acid than flat-leaf. There is also semi-savoy spinach with partially curled and wrinkled blades.

Both fresh and cooked spinach are nutrient-dense. You will likely absorb more folate, niacin, potassium, riboflavin, and vitamin C if you consume unprocessed spinach. Raw spinach is a rich source of fibre and water. And since raw spinach lacks flavour, it is simpler to incorporate into sweet smoothies. When it comes to cooked spinach, you are more likely to assimilate the iron and calcium it contains. Additionally, the quantity of vitamin A and vitamin E in cooked spinach increases. Therefore, whether you ingest spinach raw or cooked, it will still provide the nutrients your body requires.
