Juliette Gordon Low founded Girl Scouting in the United States in 1912 under the name Girl Guide troop. It was a gathering of 18 girls in Savannah, Georgia who intended to provide "something for all girls" to the United States and the globe.
Annually, Girl Scout Leader Appreciation Day is observed on April 22. This day recognises all Girl Scout volunteers who serve as leaders and mentors to these girls, who at such a young age require guidance. Girl Scout leaders are adult Girl Scout volunteers who serve as advisers and mentors. These altruistic individuals assist Girl Scouts in achieving their full potential by fostering self-assurance, teaching them valuable skills, and exposing them to new experiences. Exemplary contributors to the growth of the Girl Scout movement, they serve as role models. Although their efforts are always appreciated, Girl Scout Leader Appreciation Day has been established to highlight the significance of their roles.
Juliette Gordon Low founded Girl Scouting in the United States in 1912 under the name Girl Guide troop. It was a gathering of 18 girls in Savannah, Georgia who intended to provide “something for all girls” to the United States and the globe. Her objective was to encourage American girls to leave their families to serve their communities, explore the outdoors, and develop their independence and resourcefulness. Since its humble origins, it has served as a means of growth for women.
Late in 1912, Juliette Low proposed a merger between the Camp Fire Girls and the Girl Guides, but her proposal was denied in January 1913 because the Camp Fire Girls were the larger organisation at the time.
She attempted to merge the organisation with the Girl Scouts of America, which was founded in Des Moines, Iowa by Clara Lisetor-Lane, because she believed the similarities between the two organisations would make the merger simpler. This did not go well, as Lisetor-Lane believed Low had copied her organisation and threatened legal action. Later, the organisation of Lisetor-Lane collapses due to a lack of financial resources.
Girl Guides of America altered its name to Girl Scouts of the United States and relocated its headquarters to Washington, D.C., in 1913. Later, on March 16, 1947, the name was altered to Girl Scouts of the United States of America (G.S.U.S.A.). G.S.U.S.A. represents over 10 million members in 146 countries through its membership in the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts. Currently, more than 50 million American women are members of Girl Scouts.
