Hostess CupCake Day is annually observed on May 11 to commemorate the date in 1919 when the first Hostess CupCake was sold. Originally known as Chocolate Cup Cakes, Hostess CupCakes were originally manufactured by the Taggart Baking Company. Hostess CupCakes became so ubiquitous that 400 million of them were sold in 1988 alone. In 2011, the number skyrocketed to 600 million. Following a series of mergers and acquisitions, Hostess Cupcakes are now manufactured by Hostess Brands and remain a fan favourite in the cupcake industry.
The first Hostess CupCakes were sold on May 10, 1919. Taggart Baking Company produced the first cupcakes produced commercially, Hostess CupCakes. They were formerly known as Chocolate Cupcakes. Two Hostess CupCakes were initially priced at five cents each. The cupcakes were topped with a variety of frostings, including malted milk and vanilla. In the 1940s, a cupcake with an orange flavour was introduced to the mix.
Nevertheless, it wasn’t until the 1950s that Hostess CupCakes acquired their current identity.
D.R. “Doc” Rice, an employee at Hostess, was tasked with refining the cupcake further. He devised the concept of adding white squiggles to the cupcake’s frosting to distinguish it from other cupcake brands. Vanilla crème filling was added to the cupcake utilising a new equipment that was used to produce Twinkles, another Hostess product. This new and enhanced cupcake was tested for the first time in the state of Michigan. In a single year in 1988, 400 million Hostess CupCakes were sold. In 2011, this number increased to 600 million cupcakes.
Taggart Baking Company was acquired by Continental Baking in 1925 and subsequently renamed Hostess CupCakes. Sadly, the company declared bankruptcy in 2012, but mercifully, Apollo Global Management acquired it the following year. Hostess CupCakes are still produced and sold today under the name Hostess Brands, alongside other Hostess products such as Ding Dongs, Coffee Cakes, Twinkies, Brownies, Snoballs, Crispy Minis, Baby Bundts, etc. It is remarkable that something created 103 years ago can still be consumed with pleasure.
