On April 6, the United States celebrates Hostess Twinkie Day, but what exactly is a Twinkie? Twinkies, marketed as “Golden Sponge Cake with Creamy Filling,” are a popular treat among children and adults. James Alexander Dewar, a baker for the Continental Baking Company in Schiller Park, Illinois, devised them. Like many inventions, Twinkies were born out of necessity; a strawberry shortage prompted Dewar to replace the strawberry cream in his strawberry shortcakes with banana cream, which later evolved into their own delectable invention: Twinkies!

The background of Hostess Twinkie Day

It is believed that the first Hostess Twinkie Day was observed on April 6, 2012, the anniversary of its invention. James Dewar, the manager of the Continental Baking Company in Chicago, was the inventor of the Twinkie in 1930. He was inspired to create the snack after seeing an advertisement for Twinkle Toes sandals in St. Louis! Originally, the sweets were hand-filled and baked in shortbread pans. They were initially filled with banana cream, but during World War II, when bananas became scarce, the filling was changed to vanilla cream. Over the years, the brand, represented by its iconic mascot Twinkie the Kid, has offered a variety of flavors, including the classic banana, blue raspberry, orange cream, and pumpkin spice.

Twinkies have long been regarded as a fixture in the American junk food industry. In a bizarre case, Dan White murdered Mayor George Moscone and Harvey Milk in 1978 and used the infamous “Twinkie defense,” claiming that eating Twinkies and candy bars temporarily altered his consciousness, causing him to shoot the victims!

Additionally, Twinkies are known for their extended shelf life. The earliest Twinkie that is still edible was produced in 1976. Bill Clinton placed a Twinkie in the Millenium Time Capsule in 1999, which will not be unsealed until the year 2100! However, the Twinkie was eliminated out of concern that rodents would consume it. After declaring insolvency in 2012, Apollo Global Management acquired Hostess in 2013, and Twinkies returned to the market, reclaiming its position as one of America’s favourite snacks.
