Kebab Day in U.S. 2023: Date, History, Facts about Middle Eastern Foods

Kebab Day is not mentioned in official records as a nationally recognised holiday. Nevertheless, social media posts and online records indicate that the holiday has been observed in various regions of the country since 2019.

Kebab Day is observed on the second Friday of July (July 14 this year) as a commemoration of the kebab and its numerous variants. Kebabs are immensely popular due to their meaty consistency and astounding variety of seasonings and aromas. There are over twenty varieties of kebabs, each of which is prepared differently by each region or family. This is a great deal of variety to experience in a single day.

The background of Kebab Day

Kebab Day is not mentioned in official records as a nationally recognised holiday. Nevertheless, social media posts and online records indicate that the holiday has been observed in various regions of the country since 2019. This makes it a relatively recent phenomenon, which is reasonable given the immense prevalence of kebabs in the United States in recent years.

Due to the intense cultural influx from the Middle East, Africa, and Europe, where various types of kebabs are extremely popular, kebabs have been a part of the American diet in some capacity. In prominent American cities, such as New York, the kebab has become a popular snack or fast food since the 1970s. Probably as a result of this, a special day was created to honour its ubiquitous appeal as a quick meal or appetiser.

In the United States, interest in Middle Eastern cuisine and culture has increased over the past two decades. People are exposed to more Middle Eastern fast cuisine as a result of the rapid expansion of Middle Eastern restaurants in small and large cities throughout the United States. With so many new kebab shops and restaurants springing up across the nation, it is not surprising that people began demanding a Kebab Day to honour this popular cuisine.

Today, Kebab Day is a way to commemorate the popularity of this versatile dish, which can be eaten with a variety of breads, spices, and condiments.
