Passover is a festival that commemorates the liberation of the Jews from servitude in Egypt. Passover can be traced back to biblical times. Joseph, one of the patriarchs of the Jews, was sold into slavery in Egypt by his siblings. However, God’s influence was upon him, and he ultimately became the prime minister of the entire nation. Later, his siblings and their families joined him in Egypt, marking the beginning of the Jews’ stay there. The Egyptians forced them into servitude and cruel treatment after Joseph’s death, when they were merely foreigners residing in the land. After approximately 400 years of suffering, Moses arose as the leader of the Jews and demanded that Pharaoh, the ruler of Egypt, release the Jews and permit them to depart Egypt without hindrance.

In response to Pharaoh’s refusal, God sent ten calamities upon Egypt, beginning with the Nile River’s water turning to blood. Before the final and most lethal pandemic, God commanded the Jews to apply the blood of lambs to their doors as protection against the Angel of Death. On that night, every Egyptian firstborn son perished. When the Angel of Death passed over the Jews and spared their firstborns, this is the origin of the word “Passover.”

Since then, Passover has been commemorated to commemorate their liberation from slavery. Passover is also known as Pesah, Pesach, and the Feast of Unleavened Bread because God commanded his people to consume unleavened bread, or bread without yeast, on Passover night.
