Legal Drinking Age Day 2023: Date, History, Facts, Activities

Americans have always been astonished by the fact that it is lawful to marry, have children, go to war, purchase a firearm, and operate a motor vehicle prior to purchasing alcohol.

We all vividly recall the first time we were legally allowed to consume alcohol. Every year on July 21, the United States of America commemorates Legal Drinking Age Day. In addition to reminiscing about their first beverages and raising a glass to them, people also use this day to promote responsible drinking among youth. On this day, there are also discussions about how to combat the rising rates of alcoholism and DUI. If you are of legal drinking age, celebrating Legal Drinking Age Day is as simple as unwinding with your favourite drink after a long day.

The background of Legal Drinking Age Day

Americans have always been astonished by the fact that it is lawful to marry, have children, go to war, purchase a firearm, and operate a motor vehicle prior to purchasing alcohol. While some of these have higher risk factors than alcohol consumption, many Americans believe that the legal drinking age in the United States is absurdly high. On July 17, 1984, the National Minimum Drinking Age Act was enacted by the United States Congress. Although minors were permitted to consume alcohol under adult supervision, they were required to be at least 21 years old to purchase it. However, the seven U.S. states of Alabama, Indiana, Kansas, Michigan, Vermont, North Carolina, and Pennsylvania have outlawed the consumption of alcohol by individuals under the age of 21.

Many European nations, including the United Kingdom, have a lower drinking age than the United States. Some nations even permit children to consume alcohol in the privacy of their own residences and under parental supervision. Legal drinking ages have been a topic of discussion in numerous cultures and nations. Some believe that it inculcates the habit of drinking responsibly, whereas prohibition encourages children to consume in secret or find illegal means to acquire alcohol.

Ernest Hemmingway, a renowned author and cocktail aficionado, was born on this day in 1899. His birthday is July 21. Legal imbibing Age Day is also an appropriate time to honour the author’s imbibing prowess.
