McDonald’s Day is celebrated on April 15, the anniversary of Ray Kroc’s 1955 opening of the first McDonald’s restaurant in Des Plaines, Illinois. We believe that most, if not all, persons in the world are familiar with this name. It is one of the largest fast-food restaurant chains in the globe. Did you know that Ray Kroc was not McDonald’s founder? McDonald brothers were the company’s proprietors. Ray Kroc is credited with establishing the current business. So, let’s celebrate McDonald’s Day in honour of Kroc and the McDonald brothers, the restaurant’s proprietors.
The background of McDonald’s Day
On May 15, 1940, Richard and Maurice McDonald of New Hampshire opened the very first McDonald’s restaurant in San Bernardino, California. The McDonald brothers began their business by serving slow-cooked barbecue, and it soon took off. Later, they discovered that 80 percent of their sales were from hamburgers, so they closed the restaurant for three months. The restaurant was then transformed into a self-service establishment where clients placed orders at the windows. The menu reportedly consists of only nine items: hamburgers, cheeseburgers, three flavours of soft drinks, milk, coffee, potato crisps, and pie.
The McDonald’s brothers created the “Speedee Service System,” which allowed them to rapidly prepare food. On each of their sandwiches were ketchup, mustard, onions, and two pickles. Once the brothers replaced potato crisps with french fries and introduced triple-thick milkshakes, this newly remodelled McDonald’s began to experience growth once more. At the beginning of the 1950s, their profits doubled. They subsequently established franchises in California and Arizona. In 1954, milkshake mixer merchant Ray Kroc questioned why McDonald’s would purchase eight of his multimixers.
As soon as Kroc learned about McDonald’s restaurant operation, he recognised its potential. Then, he acquired the rights to franchise the brothers’ restaurant throughout the nation. In 1955, he established his first McDonald’s franchise in Des Plaines, Illinois. However, their relationship was strained due to divergent business management philosophies. In 1961, Kroc acquired the corporation from the McDonald brothers. The pioneering brothers who gave their names to the company and developed its business model progressively receded into the background. They maintained their original San Bernardino restaurant until they eventually went out of business.
