National Apple Strudel Day 2023: Date, History, Facts about Apple

National Apple Strudel Day was celebrated on June 17, giving us an occasion to indulge in the sweet treat. Apple strudel is a traditional Viennese dessert prepared with dough sheets, apples, sugar, and a variety of spices. The world-renowned dish is served both for breakfast and as a desert at night. Also served with coffee and tea as an evening refreshment. It can be served with a generous serving of whipped cream or a sprinkling of powdered sugar/cinnamon. While ‘Apfelstrudel,’ as it is known in Austrian, is a sweet dish, it can be made savoury by substituting spinach, cabbage, or other vegetables and seasonings for the apple. The Germanic word’strudel’ signifies whirlpool or eddy.

The background of National Apple Strudel Day

While the origins of the first National Apple Strudel Day are unknown, so too are the origins of the dish itself. Many believe that apple strudel is a German delicacy, but many others consider it to be Austrian; some even consider it to be the country’s national dish. In 1697, the ‘Wienbibliothek im Rathaus,’ also known as the Vienna Town Hall Library, is where the earliest written record of dessert was discovered. During the Austro-Hungarian reign of the eighteenth century in Austria, the delicacy gained widespread popularity. According to numerous academics, the apple strudel may have originated in Greece or Turkey.

According to historical records, the popularity of apple strudel in Europe is believed to be a direct consequence of the expansion of globalisation. The earliest documentation of strudel can be traced back to an Assyrian manuscript from the eighth century B.C., thanks to international trade and travel. According to these sources, the cuisine consists of layers of puff pastry with honey and nuts. The Mesopotamian kingdoms and widespread use of the Silk Road ensured that the delicious strudel arrived in Greece and Turkey. For Greece, the inspiration resulted in the development of ‘güllac,’ a cornstarch-based pastry with pomegranate, rose water, milk, and nuts. On the other hand, the Turks invented baklava, a multilayered pastry dessert consisting of roasted and caramelised nuts such as pistachios and almonds in a sugary syrup. During Ramadan, the month of fasting for Muslims, both of these dishes are consumed. Returning to our equally cherished apple strudel, the dough is created by repeatedly slapping it against a tabletop. As the layers begin to form, each layer is layered with spiced apple slices and almonds. In accordance with the traditional method, the prepared strudel is shaped into a spiral in the baking dish. It is baked until the pastry is fully cooked and turns golden brown.
