In the 1980s, this culinary combination was available in cans. Baked beans were among the earliest canned ‘convenience dishes’ to appear in the United States, dating back to the Civil War. Van Camp owns the trademark for Beanee Weenee and manufactures the product in a can. Other brands, including Franks & Beans, are marketed under various names.

Gilbert Van Camp is considered a trendsetter in the canned-foods industry. In 1862, he began canning experiments, and by 1863, he was successfully preserving fruits and vegetables for the winter. Soon after, he was awarded a lucrative contract to provide Union troops with food during the Civil War, when his pork and beans became a popular dish. As a consequence, the Van Camp Packing Company was established in 1882, and his son Frank Van Camp is credited with inventing the now-famous dish of pork and beans in tomato sauce in 1894.

The Van Camp Packing Company produced six million cans annually by 1898. Due to the enterprise of the Van Camp family, Indiana had become the nation’s leading producer of baked beans in jars by 1909. Before being added to the beans, the hot dogs are diced into bite-sized portions. Beans and Frank’s are considered a single phrase, but Van Camp’s possesses the trademark for Beanie Weenies. Unknown are the origins of this festivity.
