National Bubbly Day is observed annually on the first Saturday of June. Let the good times flow and enjoy a sparkling beverage in celebration. This holiday was founded by the leading cava brand in the United States, Freixenet, and represents not only the sparkling wine for which the company is known, but also the effervescent feeling that this month (summer) gives to everyone.

The background of National Bubbly Day

Wine, including sparkling wine, has existed for centuries; monks and other religious people mention it in their writings. There are indications that certain types of wine are the consequence of happy accidents. Historically, effervescent wines have been consumed exclusively during festive occasions.

Champagne, a French region, attempted to compete with Burgundy, a neighbouring region that produced silky-textured, rose-colored wine from Pinot Noir fruits. Unfortunately, the chilly climate and sour grapes of Champagne caused difficulties. Sugars that had to be added to flavour the wine remained undissolved and frequently exploded as they bubbled and exploded. The vessels that survived contained bubbles! Obviously, this pleased the French royal family. A large portion of this region’s success can be attributed to monk Dom Pérignon, whose concept was to use red wine grapes with their skins carefully removed — a significant innovation in Champagne production.

After they began shipping this wine around the globe, the English aristocracy began drinking it as well; it was primarily a luxury beverage. In France prior to the Industrial Revolution, however, the majority of vintners still attempted to eliminate the annoying bubbles. However, champagne’s prominence caused it to become a manufactured luxury item.

Countries such as Italy and South Africa have a lengthy history of winemaking that dates back to the 17th century. The Golden State has long produced effervescent wines, with the exception of during Prohibition. Although the use of the term ‘champagne’ has been restricted, historic winemakers continue to produce California Champagne.

On this day, the U.S. branch of Freixenet, called Freixenet Cava, was established to honour the wine that makes all celebrations sparkle. According to legend, cava was created by a winemaker named Josep Raventós Fatjó who desired to add sparkles to his wine. Josep’s family in Penedès, Catalonia, had been producing wine under the Codornu label for centuries. Penedès-native Macabeu, Parellada, and Xarel-lo fruits were combined when he attempted to create a ‘bubbly’ wine. His request to excavate caves (‘cava’) inspired the appellation ‘Cava’.
