Pat Olivieri, owner of Pat's King of Steak, and a hot dog vendor developed the cheesesteak in 1930 by grilling beef and adding onions to a sandwich.
On March 24th, the United States celebrates one of the all-time classic sandwiches, the cheesesteak. Similar to national liberty itself, the cheesesteak was created in Philadelphia and is exquisite, necessary, and pure. From its inauspicious beginnings in South Philadelphia, the cheesesteak has risen to become the cultural icon it is today, firmly ensconced in the sandwich hall of fame. “Continue eating (um, reading) to celebrate National Cheesesteak Day.”
Pat Olivieri, owner of Pat’s King of Steak, and a hot dog vendor developed the cheesesteak in 1930 by grilling beef and adding onions to a sandwich. This drew the attention of a nearby taxi driver, who then requested one as well. As the saying goes, the rest is history.
Pat and Harry Olivieri are generally credited with the invention of the cheesesteak sandwich, despite a few controversies. The taxi driver, intrigued by Pat’s enticing sandwich, paused to enjoy one himself. The driver suggested that Pat cease selling hot dogs and instead begin selling this new sandwich because it was so delicious.
After perfecting the formula, the steak sandwich began selling like hotcakes at Olivieri’s hot dog stand near the Italian Market in South Philadelphia. Pat opened his own eatery, Pat’s King of Steaks, due to the success of his steak sandwich. The restaurant continues to operate successfully to this day. Interestingly, Pat’s original sandwich did not contain any cheese. According to Olivieri, Joe Lorenza was the first manager at one of the Ridge Avenue restaurants to introduce provolone cheese to the sandwiches.
Since then, cheesesteaks have gained enormous popularity at food vendors and restaurants in the city. The majority of these restaurants are owned and operated by families, who put their own twist on cheesesteaks. Currently, a number of fast-food restaurants offer their own variations of cheesesteaks. The sandwich is commonly referred to as a ‘Philly cheesesteak’ outside of Philadelphia.

This seems evident, but sometimes the most straightforward solution is the best. You can roll up your sleeves and construct your own sandwich, or you can hire a professional. If the word Philadelphia is included in the name, it may not be the most authentic.
If you have the time and resources, make a pilgrimage to the origin of all enchantment. There are a shocking number of official cheesesteak excursions in Philadelphia, or if you’re feeling adventurous, you can go off the beaten path on your own. Don’t forget to stop by Pat’s and Geno’s.
