The background of National Cherry Tart Day

National Cherry Tart Day is associated with the annual National Cherry Festival held in Michigan, the state that produces 75% of the nation’s cherry crop. Cherries are delicious fruits with a brief growing season, so this day was created and celebrated in their honour. It is therefore not surprising that the fruit has become a seasonal favourite in multiple regions of the country.

Cherries were first introduced to the United States in the 1600s by early French immigrants who cultivated cherry trees in their gardens. In 1852, when Peter Dougherty, a missionary, planted cherry trees on Old Mission Peninsula, the situation changed. At that time, the notion of trees bearing fruit was implausible. To everyone’s astonishment, however, the cherry crop thrived. As a result, the surrounding neighbours began planting cherry trees as well. In 1893, the first cherry orchards were planted in Michigan, which marked the commencement of modern-day cherry production.

In the early 1900s, the cherry business flourished and the industry reached tremendous heights. The majority of the over 650 million pounds of cherries produced in the United States today are used to create delectable desserts.
