The background of National Chocolate Covered Nut Day

Chocolate is believed to have originated in Mesoamerica, where cacao plants were cultivated by the Aztecs and used to make chocolate. It is believed that Aztec rituals included the consumption of chocolate. Some claim it was even an ingredient in medicines. Even the Mayans considered chocolate to be the drink of the gods. Chocolate was neither consumed as a solid food nor was it sweet during those times. Bitter in flavour, it was consumed in liquid form and was unsweetened.

Later in the early 1500s, the Spanish explorer Hernán Cortés brought chocolate to Spain. It is said that while Cortés was visiting Mesoamerica, a Mayan emperor presented him with a cup of cocoa. Cortés then planted cocoa seeds in his hometown, elevating the prominence of cocoa plantations in Spain. The Spaniards added sugar and honey to cocoa to mask its bitter flavour. Many years later, chocolate made its way to Europe, where it became a popular beverage among monarchs and aristocrats.

According to legend, the first combination of chocolate and hazelnut occurred in the 1800s in the Piedmont region of northwest Italy. The paste was known as gianduja. This occurred long before even milk chocolate existed. When Swiss chocolatier Daniel Peter added dried milk powder to chocolate in 1876, milk chocolate was born. In the early 20th century, companies such as Nestle began mass-producing chocolate-covered nuts, which quickly became a popular snack among individuals of all ages.

National Chocolate Covered Nut Day is celebrated annually on February 25 by millions of people in honour of the delicious combination of chocolate and nuts. Its origins are unknown, but the holiday has been observed for decades.
