National Coffee Day 2023: Date, History, Facts about Coffee Needs

The origins of National Coffee Day are somewhat obscure. We believe September 29 was created as a jolting reminder to return to work after a long summer, despite the fact that it occurs a full week after the first day of autumn.

While the United States and Canada observe National Coffee Day on September 29, other countries observe it throughout the year. International Coffee Day occurs on October 1 just two days later. The International Coffee Organization has pledged to assist struggling coffee farmers all over the globe to earn a living wage.

The background of National Coffee Day

The origins of National Coffee Day are somewhat obscure. We believe September 29 was created as a jolting reminder to return to work after a long summer, despite the fact that it occurs a full week after the first day of autumn. Americans have, after all, elevated procrastination to an art form.

On the other hand, the history of coffee dates back to Yemen in the 15th century. Check out the recent book by Dave Eggers for a compelling account of what transpired. About 100 years later, Europeans received their first taste, with Venice leading the way. According to the National Coffee Association, it was not a smooth ride: “Some individuals reacted to this new beverage with suspicion or fear, dubbing it the ‘bitter invention of Satan.'” Upon its introduction to Venice in 1615, the local clergy condemned coffee. Pope Clement VIII was requested to intervene because the conflict was so heated. Before making a decision, he tasted the beverage for himself and found it so satisfying that he gave it papal sanction.”

In 1645, the first legitimate coffeehouse on mainland Europe (no, they did not serve lattes) opened in Venice.

If not for the Boston Tea Party in 1773, Americans may have never switched from tea to coffee in the United States. During the colonial rebellion against King George III’s steep tea tax, tea was replaced by coffee. In the mid-1800s, when John and Charles Arbuckle began selling coffee to ranchers in the American West, things really began to heat up. James Folger introduced coffee to California’s gold miners with great success. After returning to San Francisco in 1865, Folger became a full partner of The Pioneer Steam Coffee and Spice Mills, which would eventually become J.A. Folger & Co.

Other brands, such as Maxwell House and Hills Brothers, quickly entered the market for coffee. In the 1960s, a desire for “specialty” coffee took root. PEET’s began offering a variety of coffee in 1966, and a little Seattle company named Starbucks changed everything in 1971. According to the Allegra World Coffee Portal’s 2019 Project Café USA report, the U.S. coffee establishment market has grown to a $45.4 billion industry. In 2017, dry coffee sales exceeded $9 billion in the United States.
