National Cookie Day2023: December 4 is National Cookie Day, so get ready to fill up your cookie jar again. There are different ways to like cookies. Some people like them crunchy, while others like them soft and chewy. We should all eat more cookies because they make us happy no matter what. Do not tell your doctor, though.
Behind The Day Of The Cookie
In the United States, a cookie is called a small, sweet, thin cake. A cookie is any of a number of different hand-held sweet cakes made from flour, which can be crisp or soft. Every country has its own word for “cookie.” In Spain, they’re called galletas, while in England and Australia they’re called cookies. In Germany, they’re called keks, and in Italy, different kinds of cookies are called different things. The English language changed the Dutch word “koekje” to “cookie.” In the late 1620s, the Dutch in New Amsterdam brought the sweet treat to the United States. In 1703, the Dutch in New York brought 800 cookies to a wake, which is the first time cookies were mentioned in America.
It’s possible that hard cakes that look like cookies have been around for even longer than baking itself. In modern terms, though, they weren’t sweet enough to be called cookies. They may have started in Persia in the seventh century CE, not long after sugar became widely used in the area. They got to Europe when the Muslims took over Spain. As late as the 1400s, they were used in all walks of life in Europe, from street sellers to royal food.
At that time, people were traveling around the world a lot, so cookies were an obvious choice for a travel snack. They were like modern versions of the travel cakes people had eaten in the past. The jumble, a fairly hard cookie mostly made of nuts, sweetener, and water, was one of the first cookies that people really liked. It moved very well and became known on every continent by the same name.
