I shriek, you scream, we all scream on August 14 for National Creamsicle Day! On this day every year, one of the most famous frozen delicacies in history is celebrated, and just in time for the hottest month of the year. Whether you are making ice pops at home or waiting for the ice cream truck to arrive, today is the ideal time to indulge in a cool, sweet delight.
Creamsicles date back to the early 20th century, when Frank Epperson devised the Popsicle by accident. According to the legend, Epperson left a mixture of fruit juice and water outside when the temperature fell below freezing overnight. The Popsicle was born when he discovered the frozen mixture the next morning with a stir stick frozen in the centre.
Epperson began selling his frozen fruit juice treat to his classmates and then to his community’s acquaintances. His frozen delicacy was advertised as a “frozen drink on a stick.” He was granted a patent in 1924, years later. This was excellent timing for Epperson, as it was discovered that two men had been experimenting with ‘frozen feeders’ in 1872, which they termed the Hokey-Pokey.
The Twin Popsicle was created and sold for a nickel during the Great Depression. This permitted parents to purchase an inexpensive ice pop for two children to share.
Currently, Good Humour, a subsidiary of Unilever, owns the Creamsicle brand. In addition to orange, popular Creamsicle flavours include cherry, grape, lime, blue raspberry, and blueberry. There are now sugar-free Popsicles, 100-calorie Popsicles, and many novel flavour combinations.
Take a few moments today to commemorate the history of the Creamsicle, one of the summer’s small pleasures!

These delights are simple to prepare at home and would be a great way for the whole family to celebrate National Creamsicle Day. In a large basin, combine orange juice and vanilla ice cream in equal amounts. If you prefer to use tiny paper cups instead of popsicle moulds, pour the mixture into the cups and freeze them until partially frozen. Insert one popsicle stick into each cup, then return the cups to the freezer until frozen solid. When the Creamsicle is frozen and ready to consume, remove the paper cup and enjoy!
Numerous desserts and candies have been influenced by the Creamsicle. If your family has outgrown the traditional ice cream Creamsicle delight, try Creamsicle Rice Krispies Treats, Creamsicle pie, cupcakes, cookie bars, or cheesecake. You could also check your local market to see if the limited-edition Twizzler with Creamsicle flavour is available.
By toasting with Creamsicle mimosas, you can give this childhood favourite a mature twist. In a champagne flute, combine 1/4 cup orange juice, 1 ounce vanilla vodka, and 1 tablespoon heavy cream. Add refrigerated champagne to the top of the glass gradually. Garnish with a slice of citrus and freeze it!
Annual sales of Popsicles exceed 2 billion!
The original Creamsicle appears to be the most popular, while cherry-flavored popsicles appear to be the second most popular.
A 21-foot ice pop created in the Netherlands in 1997 holds the Guinness World Record for largest Popsicle.
Kevin Strahle of Ridgewood, New Jersey, claims to have devoured the most Popsicles in one minute on December 7, 2017; he consumed six in only sixty seconds.
On July 7, 2014, Jimmy Prince from Edmonton, Alberta, Canada set the world record for consuming a Creamsicle in 11.81 seconds.
