The background of National Crouton Day

People have been using croutons to utilise discarded bread for hundreds of years. Since the Middle Ages, stale bread has been used in dishes (mostly stews).

The versatile crouton first appeared in France and referred to tiny pieces of bread crusts served with beverages. Some people believe that French biscotti and other ancient baked products inspired croutons. There is even a renowned croutons folktale on the internet! According to legend, the ill-mannered knight-turned-diplomat Sir Edgar Crouton was assigned to England, although no one knew how he obtained the position. Sir Crouton was frequently required as a diplomat to dine with the monarch of England, and on one occasion he was served soup and bread together. As the king observed, he inadvertently dropped several pieces of bread into his soup and was unable to retrieve them. He merely shoved everything into his mouth, including bread and soup. Fortunately, this was delectable. Sir Crouton determined that this delicacy required a new name, and upon discovering that none existed, he gave it his own.

Rothbury Farms, an American family-owned business, decided to present a special day to honour this humble bread dish. They established this day in 2015, and the United States has been commemorating this crunchy condiment ever since.

5 AMUSING FACTS ABOUT CRUNCHS

This is due to the fact that the French adore bread and are responsible for many of these names!

The word crouton derives from the French term ‘croûte’, which means ‘crust’; crouton is the diminutive form of the word, so it means ‘little crust’ in French.

In North America, large bags of a variation of the crouton — dried and cubed rather than buttered and oiled — are marketed for use in Thanksgiving dishes.

The French words ‘croute’ and ‘croustade’ and the English term ‘crouton’ are all derived from the Latin word ‘crusta,’ which means’shell’ or ‘crust.’

Unless the crouton is made from healthful grains and is baked, one-half cup of croutons will add approximately 100 calories to your dish.
