We've all had the thought, "This pizza is good, but I wish there was more [insert topping here]" Well, a deep dish pizza has more of everything: sauce, mozzarella, vegetables, and (if that's your thing) meat.
Oh, pizza. Is there a single food that is more universally adored and so immensely divisive? New Yorkers and their New York-style segments vs. Chicagoans and their deep dish pies are the most contentious of these differences. Ike Sewell, the founder of Uno’s Pizzeria, devised deep dish pizza in the Windy City in 1943. It became so popular that it spawned a massive national chain and dozens upon dozens of other deep dish pizzerias in major cities around the globe. So tuck a serviette into your collar, grab a fork and knife (you’ll need them) and join us on April 5 to commemorate National Deep Dish Pizza Day!

They argue that any pizza that requires a utensil and a knife is not pizza. However, we at National Today are egalitarians and believe that all pizzas are created equal. Therefore, we would happily consume what others consider “fake” pizza. For us, it’s just more deep dish.

There is much more to admire about Chicago besides its pizza. (though their pizza is a huge draw). Why not use the holiday as an excuse to visit the epicentre of deep-dish pizza? Take a selfie in front of the Bean, watch a Cubs game at Wrigley field and visit as many deep dish pizza restaurants as possible. You could even categorise them if you wanted to.
Not a resident of Chicago? That’s okay, there are over 130 Uno’s Pizzeria and Grill locations across the country. It is present in 21 states and has spread as far as South Korea and Saudi Arabia! If there is no location close you, have no fear; they also ship (we know, we’re enablers).
It’s not as easy as preparing a regular pizza, but the extra effort should make it more satisfying, right? In addition, when you prepare it yourself, you can snack on the toppings as you go. Win-win.
