These courageous volunteers became known as “donut lassies” later on. They would even use combat helmets to fry seven donuts simultaneously.
National Donut Day was established in 1938 as a means to honour the Salvation Army members who assisted soldiers during World War I. National Donut Day is now commonly observed on the first Friday of June. Numerous donut shops are known to give them away for free, providing a compelling reason to take time out of your day to indulge in this most beloved delicacy.
