National Fluffernutter Day 2023: Date, History, Facts, Activities

October 8 is observed as National Fluffernutter Day, a day when we nostalgically commemorate the childhood sandwich consisting of marshmallow fluff and peanut butter compressed between two slices of bread. In remembrance of its significance in the childhood recollections of numerous New Englanders, Fluffernutter is commemorated with its own national holiday.

The background of National Fluffernutter Day

In the nineteenth century, marshmallows and their culinary relatives, marshmallow cream and fluff, were utilized as homeopathic remedies, despite the fact that marshmallows originated in the Roman Empire. Although the Marshmallow Fluff, which is commonly linked to the renowned Fluffernutter, was initially prepared in 1917 by Archibald Query from Sommerville, Massachusetts. Fluff was produced in large quantities by Archibald in his kitchen, where it was sold door-to-door until sugar shortages and rationing during World War I put an unpleasant end to Fluff sales.

Two candlemakers became Archie’s collaborators in 1920, subsequent to the conclusion of the war, and they renamed the initial recipe “Too Sweet Marshmallow Fluff.” On May 14, 1920, Archie sold his formulation to Fred L. Mower and H. Allen Durkee for $500; they subsequently renamed their product Marshmallow Fluff.

Over the subsequent decade, Durkee-Mower, Inc.’s Fluff sales increased. The company sponsored “The Flufferettes,” a 15-minute radio variety program, in 1930 to promote their popular confection. As the market demanded more gelatinous, sweet Fluff, the company published “The Yummy Book” in 1940, which featured recipes that incorporated Fluff.

The decade of the 1960s marked a turning point for the renowned peanut butter and Marshmallow Fluff sandwich as Durkee-Mower, Inc. registered the trademark “Fluffernutter,” the name of the most renowned confection made with Fluff.

The year 2006 was momentous for the Fluffernutter. The Massachusetts state assembly considered a resolution to designate it as the official sandwich of the Commonwealth. In the same year, Brigham’s introduced Fluffernutter as a novel ice cream flavor. While the proposed state sandwich was unsuccessful, the ice cream was a success. During that summer, the inaugural festival honoring Marshmallow Fluff was held.
