The first Friday of September is observed as National Food Bank Day. This year, the event will take place on September 1. Hunger is a persistent issue in our global community, and National Food Bank Day serves as a reminder that nobody should go to bed famished. With the aid of volunteers and social workers, food banks provide the needy with food. They also advocate self-sufficiency tools. The purpose of this day is to recognise the workers, volunteers, and food bank organisations who operate in this area.
John van Hengel established the St. Mary’s Food Bank Alliance in 1967 as a non-profit, non-religious organisation. Van Hegel was searching for a method to prevent food waste and eventually came up with the concept of redistributing uneaten food to the hungry. St. Mary’s was the first organisation to utilise the food bank business model. St. Mary’s is regarded as the first food bank, making it a pioneer in the food bank system. Since almost 50 years ago, the organisation has effectively combated starvation. This concept of food banks spread, resulting in the establishment of numerous food banks across the nation.
Van Hengel continued his work and founded additional food pantries as well as America’s Second Harvest, which is now known as Feeding America. In addition to establishing the Global Food Banking Network, he is now known as “the father of food banking.” National Food Bank Day was selected to honour Van Hengel’s extraordinary contributions.
In September 2000, world leaders formulated the Millennium Development Goals and pledged to attain them by 2015. The primary objective was to eradicate extreme destitution and hunger. They also outlined three objectives: The first objective was to halve the number of persons suffering from hunger by 2015. The second objective was to reduce the likelihood of an infant dying from hunger before the age of five, and the third objective was to reduce the rate of extreme poverty. Since 1990, the rate of extreme poverty has been reduced in half and the first goal has been attained by approximately forty countries. Food organisations are essential to the achievement of these objectives. About 42 million Americans contend with food insecurity, and food banks assist these individuals.
