St. Mary’s was the first organisation to utilise the food bank business model. St. Mary’s is regarded as the first food bank, making it a pioneer in the food bank system. Since almost 50 years ago, the organisation has effectively combated starvation. This concept of food banks spread, resulting in the establishment of numerous food banks across the nation.

Van Hengel continued his work and founded additional food pantries as well as America’s Second Harvest, which is now known as Feeding America. In addition to establishing the Global Food Banking Network, he is now known as “the father of food banking.” National Food Bank Day was selected to honour Van Hengel’s extraordinary contributions.
