Malnutrition is a hazard that is rapidly escalating. It is a global issue comparable to poverty and climate change. According to the World Committee on Food Security, malnutrition in all its forms, including hunger, lack of micronutrients, overweight, and obesity, is a major problem not only in developing countries but also in developed countries.
National Food Is Medicine Day is observed annually on September 14 in the United States. The day is used by health and food organisations to raise awareness of the obstacles to healthy food in the United States. The campaign emphasises that many low-income families face obstacles that make it difficult for them to obtain the nutritious foods they require.
National Food is Medicine Day aims to generate sufficient buzz to encourage government and private sector entities to collaborate on developing solutions that make it easier for more individuals to obtain wholesome food.
Malnutrition is a hazard that is rapidly escalating. It is a global issue comparable to poverty and climate change. According to the World Committee on Food Security, “malnutrition in all its forms, including hunger, lack of micronutrients, overweight, and obesity, is a major problem not only in developing countries but also in developed countries.” Malnutrition encompasses everything from hunger to obesity.
Poor diets and the associated health hazards are the primary contributors to the current global disease burden. Poor diets are either deficient in certain vitamins, minerals, and fibre, or they contain an excessive amount of calories, saturated fats, sodium, and sugar.
In 2010, 10% of the global disease burden (the number of years lost due to illness, disability, or premature mortality) was attributable to unhealthy eating and lack of exercise. By 2015, six of the top eleven global risk factors, such as malnutrition, a high body mass index (BMI), and elevated cholesterol, were diet-related.
Obesity is usually linked to eating too much, but it can also be caused by not receiving enough of certain nutrients. The number of adults in sub-Saharan Africa with a high BMI quadrupled between 1990 and 2010. The Pacific, the Caribbean, the Middle East, and Central America all have extremely high adult overweight and obesity rates.
Consequently, all nations must take action to combat malnutrition, micronutrient deficiency, overweight, and obesity simultaneously. On National Food is Medicine Day, the Food Equality Initiative encourages individuals to join the movement by donating to organisations that assist individuals in gaining access to nutritious food. Subsidising the additional costs of gluten-free food reduces medical expenses, decreases the risk of food-borne illness, and makes it simpler for low-income families to eat healthily on a budget.
