National Gin and Tonic Day is observed annually on April 9 to honour this vintage beverage. Similar to pancakes and maple syrup, bacon and eggs, spaghetti and meatballs, peanut butter and jelly, and apple pie and ice cream, gin and tonic (G&T) feels appropriate. Okay, that’s enough food fantasising for now!
What distinguishes gin and tonic is that it is remarkably simple to prepare yet tastes incredible. It doesn’t get any more straightforward than this, does it? G&T is the ideal daytime beverage. Just kidding, it’s also ideal for the evening!

The background of National Gin and Tonic Day

Gin has experienced a roller coaster of fluctuating popularity throughout history. The origin of it is even more intriguing. Gin and tonic was created by officers of the Presidency Armies, the East India Company’s Armed Forces operating on the Indian subcontinent. During this time period, malaria was a common problem for Europeans residing in India and other tropical regions. George Cleghorn, a Scottish physician, investigated the use of quinine in the prevention of malaria in the eighteenth century. Quinine was ingested with tonic water, but its taste was bitter.

The officers of the Presidency armies in India began adding water, sugar, lime, and alcohol to quinine to make the drink more palatable in the early 19th century. Thus was created the famous gin and tonic cocktail! The officers already had gin as part of their ration, so it was simple to prepare this beverage. Since tonic water is no longer used as an antimalarial medication, it contains less quinine and is typically sweeter and less astringent than it once was.

Winston Churchill stated, “Gin and tonic has saved the lives and minds of more Englishmen than all the doctors in the Empire combined.” That is a noteworthy compliment. Schweppes, the renowned tonic water introduced in 1783, was targeted at the expanding market of overseas Britons who were required to take a daily preventative dose of quinine. Schweppes and other commercial tonics experienced explosive growth in the colonies, and eventually in Britain as well. Malaria and the British Army in India appear to be responsible for the creation of this sweet and delectable cocktail known as G&T.
