National Grape Popsicle Day is observed on May 27 to honour both grape Popsicles and the invention of the Popsicle. People throughout the United States observe this day by creating homemade grape Popsicles. While the day is dedicated to grape Popsicles, they can be made in a variety of flavours, including lemon, strawberry, watermelon, orange, cherry, and more. Popsicles, which were accidentally invented in California in 1905, are one of the most ubiquitous frozen treats in the United States. People commemorate this day by sharing grape and other flavours of Popsicles.

The background of National Grape Popsicle Day

National Grape Popsicle Day celebrates these delicious frozen treats. Today, everything is about grape Popsicles, whether they are homemade, store-bought, or purchased from the ice cream vendor himself. Popsicles are a popular dessert among children and adults of all ages. This frozen dessert is the most delicious way to cool down on a sweltering summer day.

Humans have relished frozen desserts for millennia. Ancient Romans dispatched captives to the mountains to collect ice blocks, which were then crushed and served with fruits, syrups, and spices. Thomas Jefferson served iced sorbets to his visitors when they visited his Virginia plantation, Monticello, in U.S. history.

In 1905, 11-year-old Frank Epperson was making soda on the porch of his residence in San Francisco by combining water with a white powdered flavour. He neglected to bring the soda inside, leaving it outside with the stirring stick still inside. The temperature dropped during the night, and the next morning, Frank discovered his drink cemented to a stick.

In 1922, as an adult, Frank introduced his dessert at a firefighter’s banquet, where it received high praise. And by 1923, he was selling his treat-on-a-stick in an Alameda, California amusement park. Epperson named his icy treat the ‘Epsicle’ ice pop. However, his children referred to it as Pop’s’sicle. He thought the name was catchy and eventually patented it in 1924 so that he could share his ‘Popsicle’ with the world!

5 FACTS ABOUT POPSICLES THAT YOU DIDN’T KNOW

Originally, the Popsicle was marketed as “a frozen drink on a stick.”

Cherry is the most popular of the seven original Popsicle flavours, which also include root beer, lemon, banana, orange, grape, and watermelon.

During the Great Depression, the Twin Popsicle with two sticks was introduced so that two children could divide it for only a nickel.

Each year, over two billion Popsicles in over 25 varieties are sold.

The first ‘ice-cream truck’ vendor was a man in Nebraska who sold Popsicles from a horse-drawn cart to children.
