They were an irreverent response to the reigning gummi candi, the popular gummi bear, which originated in the kitchen of Hans Riegel’s Bonn home in 1920.
The company of Riegel, HARIBO, manufactured squishy, fruity gelatin dancing bears that evoked European circuses and festivals. The bears gained worldwide popularity. Trolli wished to provide children with something that could be used as a source of amusement with their parents, so it developed gummi worms. Some Gummi historians assert that Trolli introduced the gummi worms on July 15, which is the anniversary of the birth of the bears in Bonn.
There were other gelatin candies after the bears became ubiquitous, but nothing could surpass the bears until the worms appeared. As a result, Trolli celebrated their triumph by giving the worms a special day.
In 2004, Trolli decided to deviate from the norm by introducing another non-bear shape: roadkill. They created gummi squirrels, chickens and snakes whose demise was evidenced by tyre traces. Kraft Foods had by then acquired the Trolli U.S. brand, but they were forced to pull the product from the market the following year due to consumer backlash.
Today, gummi worms are both sour and delicious. They may be dual-flavored and dual-colored. As a fun addition to dessert, they have been served in ice cream, used to create vodka shots, and inserted halfway into the frosting of a chocolate cake. Between 2020 and 2024, it is anticipated that the global gummi and jellied confectionery market will reach $40 billion.
