National Hot Toddy Day 2024: Do you want some festive mixed drinks? Do you need any warming up? Then, on January 11, you should commemorate National Hot Toddy Day. The heated beverage is made in a kettle with water, honey, lemon, cinnamon stick, and several types of alcohol (typically whiskey, rum, or brandy). It’s ideal to drink it by the fire, especially when there is snow outside. We’ll let you decide whether to believe the rumors about this warm beverage’s ability to treat cold and flu symptoms.

National Hot Toddy Day’s History

The word “toddy” comes from the Hindi word tārī, which refers to a beverage prepared from the fermented sap of the toddy palm, an Indian tree, and dates back to the British colonial era. The modern version of the drink barely resembles its namesake, even though this may have been where it originally acquired its name.

The beverage has changed dramatically throughout time. The origins of the contemporary hot toddy may have been in Scotland in the eighteenth century. At this point, the Scots heated the beverage in an attempt to treat various illnesses, including the common cold.

Additionally, it’s believed that the Irish-born physician Robert Bentley Todd deserves some of the credit for creating the beverage when he recommended a hot concoction of brandy, sugar syrup, water, and Canella (white cinnamon). It is thought to have arrived in North America when American colonists drank hot toddies as a kind of “liquid courage” before having to engage in combat during the Revolutionary War.

As time went on and more people started to believe in the preventative benefits of this unique drink, its popularity grew. In fact, a Burlington, Vermont newspaper heralded it as a “cure-all” back in 1837.

A classic hot toddy now includes a shot of alcohol (usually whiskey, though it can also be brandy or rum) plus a mixture of water, honey, lemon, and cinnamon (usually in the shape of a cinnamon stick). Ginger, cloves, star anise, apple cider vinegar, maple syrup, lime juice, or bitters are some possible additions.
