National Ice Cream Day 2023: Date, History, Facts, Celebrations

Unfortunately, there is no known inventor who can be attributed with creating ice cream. But ice cream has a history as varied as gelato. According to legend, ice cream-like foods were first ingested in China between 618 and 97 AD.

National Ice Cream Day is observed annually on the third Sunday of July, which falls on the 16th this year. Reagan desired to commemorate a delicacy relished by more than 90 percent of the American populace. In 1984, he proclaimed a national ice cream day, and his proclamation actually elevated the American dairy industry. In fact, Americans continue to lead the world in consumption of this frozen delicacy, consuming an average of 23 litres per year. Reagan also proclaimed July as National Ice Cream Month, describing ice cream as a ”nutritious and wholesome food that is relished by more than ninety percent of Americans.” Since then, the holiday has inspired cravings around the globe and is celebrated annually. Standing in the frozen food aisle urgently attempting to make a decision? Or are you considering how to commemorate this magnificent day? You need look no further. The muse has arrived.

The background of National Ice Cream Day

Unfortunately, there is no known inventor who can be attributed with creating ice cream. But ice cream has a history as varied as gelato. According to legend, ice cream-like foods were first ingested in China between 618 and 97 AD. The first dish was prepared with flour, bovine milk, and camphor, a lotion-like organic compound. Alexander the Great reportedly enjoyed ice and snow flavoured with nectar and honey.

In addition, the Bible indicates that King Solomon relished iced beverages during the harvest season. During the Roman Empire, Caesar would dispatch people to collect snow from the mountains in order to cover it in fruit and vegetable juices.

Nearly a millennium later in Italy, Marco Polo returned from the Far East with the recipe for what is now known as sherbet. It is presumed that this recipe evolved into ice cream, which was formerly known as ”Cream Ice.’ In 1660, ice cream was first made available to the general public. In his café, an Italian man named Francesco Procopio Dei Coltelli decided to perfect a machine constructed by his ancestor, a fisherman. In Paris, the recipe combining milk, butter, eggs, and cream was sold.

The first mention of ice cream in the United States is found in a letter written by Governor William Bladen’s visitor in Maryland in 1744. Then, on May 12, 1777, the New York Gazette published the first advertisement for ice cream in the United States. After the American Revolution, ice cream became extremely popular in the United States.

Since then, ice cream has exploded onto the desert landscape with the invention of home machines and the emergence of ice cream vans, floats, sundaes, and brands such as ”Ben and Jerry’s” and ”Haagen-Dazs” that we still consume today. Ice cream has such a profound impact on society that the brain of an ice cream aficionado has been compared to that of an addict. When the brain desires ice cream, it reacts with fanatical fervour.
