National Macaroon Day 2023: Date, History, Activities

Mrs. Esther Levy deserves credit for popularising the delicious macaroon. In 1871, Mrs. Levy published the "First Jewish-American Cookbook."

Macaron or Macaroon? National Macaroon Day occurs on May 31, and it is most certainly an American holiday, since macaroons are unquestionably an American confection. Nevertheless, the confusion is normal. Macaron and macaroon share the same origins and many of the same ingredients. These delectable confections require a substantial quantity of sugar. Both cakes use egg whites to give them volume and a light texture. However, the French macaron (which originated in Italy) uses almond flour as its base, whereas the American macaroon makes excellent use of coconut shreds.

The background of National Macaroon Day

Mrs. Esther Levy deserves credit for popularising the delicious macaroon. In 1871, Mrs. Levy published the “First Jewish-American Cookbook.” This recipe was originally published in the chapter on ‘cakes’ because there was no chapter on biscuits. However, this is understandable, as macaroons lack a cookie-like texture. It is tender and slightly chewy, resembling cake more than a cookie. Nevertheless, the bite-sized portion is undoubtedly cookie-like.

Macaroons should be celebrated and acknowledged for their unique qualities. When the first coconut plantations planted in Florida started producing fruit, coconut flour replaced almond flour. In addition to being delicious treats, macaroons were an early example of the locavore movement, which promotes the consumption of locally grown foods.

How do you characterise a coconut macaroon? They have a wonderful texture thanks to the grated coconut. They are sweet, and when the sugar around the cookie’s margins caramelises, they become caramelised. They are both chewy and tender, like a pastry, but based on their size and portability, it is obvious that they are cookies. Best of all, they are ridiculously simple to prepare. You can use coconut shreds, vanilla extract, egg whites, and sugar, or you can use sweetened condensed milk and coconut shreds.Jewish households were making macaroons for Passover celebrations long before gluten was even recognised. The absence of any leavening agent meant it complied with the Passover dietary laws. It was a fortunate accident that they are also delicious. If you or a friend are on a gluten-free diet or someone is allergic to gluten, serving macaroons will make you appear like a hero. Once you sample them, you’ll realise that it’s not a sacrifice, but you don’t have to tell anyone.Macaroons have become increasingly versatile over time. There are child-friendly chocolate chip macaroons and tea-party-appropriate chocolate-dipped macaroons. Even red velvet macaroons exist! When you receive an invitation to an elegant and intimate dinner, you can bring an entire plate or whip up a batch for the kids to nibble on. They are the ideal confection for any time or place.

NATIONAL MACAROON DAY ACTIVITIES

Make macaroons

Whether you make them from scratch or use sweetened condensed milk as a convenience, the recipe is straightforward and you can have homemade macaroons ready in less than an hour. If you’re preparing them from scratch, you’ll need a kitchen mixer or hand mixer with a balloon whisk attachment to whip the egg whites until they are impossibly light and fluffy. The more skillfully you execute this phase, the tastier the final product will be. Caution: if you prepare these when you are home alone, you may not be able to resist eating every single one.

Buy macaroons

Don’t let the reality that you don’t know how to separate egg whites and egg yolks discourage you. Or maybe you never cook and only use your oven to store shoes. Don’t let anything stop you from commemorating National Macaroon Day! Although they are most commonly found in stores during the spring, you can purchase them at your local grocery store or online. There are numerous companies that produce them at a variation of prices and flavours!

Honour Mrs. Levy for her contribution

While we can credit Esther Levy for bringing coconut macaroons the recognition they deserve, we can also thank her for educating people about Jewish cuisine in the United States. Prepare your family a complete Jewish meal. Jewish food is comfort food at its finest, so it may be difficult to convince guests to depart. Start with chicken broth with matzo balls, then braise a beautiful brisket with potatoes, carrots, and gravy, and finish with some traditional and beautiful coconut macaroons.
