National Mojito Day 2023: Date, History, Facts, Activities

National Mojito Day is on July 11, so let’s celebrate with a drink. On a sweltering summer day, what could be more refreshing than this classic minty cocktail? The mojito is one of the most popular cocktails in the United States and is traditionally prepared with white rum, lime juice, sugar, mint, and carbonated water. It is a cocktail that is appreciated for its fresh and distinctive flavour, and although the recipe has been modified numerous times with herbs and fruits, the original remains the most cherished. Therefore, only one action remains. Fill your glass, kick up your feet, and enjoy a mojito or two (we won’t condemn) while basking in the sun.

The background of National Mojito Day

The origin of the mojito dates back to 1586 in Cuba. After invading Cartagena de Indias and en route to Cuba, Sir Francis Drake, according to an ancient tale, sought treatment for scurvy and dysentery. He returned with the mojito as a solution. It contained aguardiente (a South American distilled beverage), mint and sugarcane. The unusual concoction was well-received by his employees, many of whom reported reduced symptoms. On La Bodeguita del Medio, a pub on the Cuban island of La Bodeguita del Medio, the proprietors continue to assert that the mojito was invented there.

In 1931, ”Sloppy Joe’s Havana Bar” distributed a cocktail menu that included two mojitos, one made with gin and the other with rum. In 1939, the formula was published in ”El Floridita Cocktail Book”. Since then, the drink’s popularity has increased.

The rise in prominence of the drink in the early 20th century can be partially attributed to Ernest Hemingway. It was rumoured to be his preferred beverage. The mojito has become synonymous with the summer season. Its crisp flavour and cool temperature complement a hot summer day flawlessly. According to a 2016 survey, the mojito was the most popular cocktail in both France and the United Kingdom.

NATIONAL MOJITO DAY ACTIVITIES

Make your own mojito

Follow the original recipe or add additional ingredients based on your whim. Combine lime juice, rum, sugar, syrup, soda, and mint for the classic. Add pulverised ice and mix thoroughly. Place the mixture in a pitcher and serve it to your visitors.

Make your own mojito-flavored ice cream

Combining condensed milk and whipped cream yields the desired result. Without an ice cream maker, these two ingredients will solidify. Add 150ml of rum, four limes, and fresh mint leaves later.

Try Mojito cupcakes

Attempt to make mojito cupcakes using online recipes. A popular method is to construct a cupcake with lime flavour, mint-lime syrup, and rum and lime buttercream. Even the most sceptic visitors will be impressed by this.
