National Nachos Day 2023: History

Eagle Pass, Texas, is situated across the Rio Grande from the Mexican border community of Piedras Negras, where any discussion of the history of nachos must begin. In 1943, on a particular day, the spouses of American servicemen stationed at Ft. Duncan visited the Victory Club, a popular gathering place for Piedras Negras. Regrettably, the restaurant had ceased operations for the day.

Nevertheless, Ignacio “Nacho” Anaya, a manager, resolved to assemble a dish using the remaining ingredients at his disposal. One of these? Spreads of cheese and tortillas. By slicing the fried tortillas into triangles, garnishing them with jalapeño chiles and shredded cheddar, Anaya established an enduring tradition that continues to bear his name. (Favorite Nacho! Without you, where would our Super Bowl festivities be?

In 1976, an alternative variation of nachos was introduced at Arlington Stadium during a Texas Rangers baseball game. This variation featured the now-familiar cheese dressing. Howard Cosell, an iconic ABC sportscaster, coined the term “nachos” during a Monday Night Football game two years later, thereby contributing to the Americanization of this comparatively uncomplicated cuisine.

“The International Nacho Festival” is still observed annually in October in Piedras Negras, and features live music, art, cultural activities, and a “giant nacho” competition.

They are ideal for celebrations.

Is there a festivity in which nachos are inappropriate? Consider birthdays, the Fourth of July, and the Super Bowl; if you’re bringing nachos, you might as well don a cape since you’ve already become the life of the party. Make a statement instead of showing up with a five-dollar bag of bland potato chips; pull out that salsa!

They can be garnished with virtually anything.

It is not necessary to rely solely on guacamole and spicy sauce. Nachos can be prepared in accordance with any culinary approach. Consider pizza dough that has been crisped before adding marinara and mozzarella. Infinite possibilities exist.

They may serve as an entrée or a snack.
