It's not easy to become a pastry chef in the culinary industry (see what we did there?). After all, baking is more of an exact science than cooking, so it requires an absurd amount of professional training.
National Pastry Day 2023:We’re not sure about you, but we’ve never encountered a pastry that we didn’t enjoy. We are therefore excited to observe December 9 as National Pastry Day. Pastries have been around since antiquity.
The ancient Egyptians made pastry dough from flour and grain meal, sweetening it with honey. The Greeks and Romans used paper-thin pastry dough, which was the ancestor of phyllo dough, to make sweets. During the Middle Ages, pastry was brought to Europe, where it was made with fats like butter and shortening to create a stronger dough.
Pastries are found in almost every culture you can imagine, but in French kitchens during the 18th century, they became extremely sophisticated. There’s a reason why we consider France to be the global center of pastries. There are a gazillion different kinds of pastries available these days; please give us one of each.
Putting on Your Own Shoes Day 2023: Date, History and amazing facts about shoes
Visit the bakery in your neighborhood.
We can almost assure you that you won’t have to go far to find a delectable bakery, regardless of how big of a city you live in or how tiny and isolated your town is. Enter, purchase as many pastries as you like, and dare not consider the word “calories.” Remember, you’re supporting a nearby company.
Watch programs about cooking.
Consume food with your eyes while binge-watching a ton of baking programs. There’s the recent phenomenon “The Great British Bake Off,” or “Cupcake Wars,” which focuses on pastries specifically. Try “Ace of Cakes,” “Top Chef: Just Desserts,” or our personal favorite, vintage Julia Child YouTube footage, if those don’t satisfy you.
Prepare the pastry dough.
We are aware that it can be alluring to purchase premade dough from the grocery store’s freezer section in order to save time when making pastries. However, why not give creating pastry dough from scratch a try in honor of National Pastry Day? Although it might not be simple, the rewards will be tremendous. You’ll also be able to indulge your inner kid by sneaking taste tests of the raw dough. Allocate an afternoon, don an apron, and begin the kneading process. Just make sure you always have a lot of butter available.
Bomboloni
Although it may sound like “bomb baloney,” that is where the similarities end. This sugar-dusted, vanilla cream-filled treat resembles a donut more than anything else. I’ll have seventeen.
Marshmallow-Toasted Butterscotch Pie
This isn’t your dessert that you can make quickly. This one is going to leave people speechless—decked out in chocolate, cream, brown sugar, and a TON of other goodies.
Jam-Studded Croissant
Donuts? Croissants? We’re not even bothered. Any day of the week, cronuts will make us go crazy.
Nutella Cupcakes
You can try to convince us that Nutella isn’t the greatest spread out there, even though peanut butter is more widely consumed. when paired with a pastry? Heaven.
Brookies
Attention, croissant lovers: there’s a new hybrid dessert in town. One thing remained to be asked after attempting one of these treasures: why hadn’t this been thought of earlier?
Crunchable Chocolate with Caramel Filling
We have something even MORE decadent in case the bombolonis weren’t quite your style. Meet this majesty — who’s checking labels, though? They probably have enough sugar to give an elephant a sugar rush.
Cupcake Snickerdoodles
Though the snickerdoodle cookie, this cupcake’s cousin, is probably more well-known to you, it’s time to meet the true star of the family. Cupcakes with snickerdoodles are SURE to please everyone.
It allows you to justify indulging.
Although we all adore carbs, fats, and sugars, they aren’t always the healthiest foods to consume. But come on, let’s celebrate all things pastry on one day of the year, so bring on the doughnuts. croissants as well. eclairs as well. along with fruit tarts.
It honors talent.
It’s not easy to become a pastry chef in the culinary industry (see what we did there?). After all, baking is more of an exact science than cooking, so it requires an absurd amount of professional training. A lot of chemistry is at play here! If the temperatures or measurements are not precisely correct, it is very easy to make a mess when making pastries.
Using the various types of pastry dough to create a wide range of desserts is another creative aspect of the job. We’re happy we can use this holiday to honor pastry chefs because they don’t always receive the same recognition as regular chefs.
It has a flavorful aspect.
We imagine that when we mention the word “pastry,” you instantly think of baked goods. However, there are also a ton of delectable savory pastries available. Consider popovers, biscuits, quiches, and vegetable tarts. Yes, that does imply that you can have pastries for both your main course and your dessert on this holiday. We’ll keep it a secret.
