National Polyphenol Day 2023: Date, History, Facts, Activities

The term 'polyphenol' is derived from the Ancient Greek word 'polus,' which means'many.' Adding a hydroxyl group to an aromatic benzenoid ring produces the chemical structure known as phenol.

National Polyphenol Day is observed on July 11 and is dedicated to polyphenols, a form of plant-based micronutrient. These micronutrients serve as natural energy enhancers and offer a variety of health benefits, including protection against age-related damage. Polyphenol-rich foods include extra-virgin olive oil, dark chocolate, and dark-colored fruits such as pomegranates and chokeberries. Dr. Steven Gundry, a renowned cardiovascular surgeon who specialises in nutrition and the management of elderly patients, recommends a diet high in polyphenols. Two potential advantages of a diet rich in polyphenols are enhanced mental lucidity and heart health.

The background of National Polyphenol Day

The term ‘polyphenol’ is derived from the Ancient Greek word ‘polus,’ which means’many.’ Adding a hydroxyl group to an aromatic benzenoid ring produces the chemical structure known as phenol. At least since 1894, the term polyphenol has been utilised. In 2021, in honour of company founder Dr. Steven Gundry’s birthday, the Gundry MD team declared July 11 National Polyphenol Day.

The date of Gundry’s birth is July 11, 1950. In the 1990s, he conducted research on cardiac surgery. In 1972, Gundry earned a Bachelor of Arts from Yale University and in 1977, he earned his medical degree from the Medical College of Georgia. During his tenure as a cardiothoracic surgeon, Gundry authored over 300 articles and filed multiple patents for medical devices. As a transition from his position as Clinical Professor of Cardiothoracic Surgery at the Seventh-day Adventist Loma Linda University School of Medicine to private practise, he established the International Heart & Lung Institute in Palm Springs, California, in 2002.

In 2016, Dr. Gundry founded Gundry MD as a wellness blog, YouTube channel, and supplement company to assist individuals in regaining their health. National Polyphenol Day aims to raise awareness and educate the public about the astounding health benefits of polyphenols.
