National Poutine Day 2023: Date, History, Facts, Activities

The Canadian dish poutine is influenced by French cuisine. In French-dominated regions of Quebec, the name is pronounced "pou-tin," whereas it is pronounced "poo-teen" in other areas.

National Poutine Day is observed on April 11 annually. It was designed as a promotion for the dish in 2018. Although it is most popular in the Canadian province of Quebec, poutine is served and relished in numerous other locations. There are multiple alleged origins for the dish. Jean-Paul Roy deserves credit for serving the cuisine in 1964 at his restaurant, Le Roy Jucep. According to a copyright certificate issued by the Canadian Intellectual Property Office, he was an early founder.

The background of National Poutine Day

The Canadian dish poutine is influenced by French cuisine. In French-dominated regions of Quebec, the name is pronounced “pou-tin,” whereas it is pronounced “poo-teen” in other areas. This dish includes french potatoes, cheese curds, and brown gravy. The mixture is combined in a sack. The dish is prepared differently by various restaurants, each developing their own signature version. Some individuals add meat sauce, butter, chicken, and additional components. Over the years, poutine has gained popularity and can now be found in restaurants, fast food chains, roadside food carts, and even sports stadiums.

In addition to Toronto, Ottawa, Quebec, New Hampshire, and Montreal, National Poutine Day is celebrated annually in numerous other cities. It is also extremely prevalent in America. The dish was accidentally produced in Quebec and has since gained popularity. It soon became an iconic dish that was well received. The dish gained such popularity in Canada that it was designated the country’s national dish. The holiday promotes Canadian culture and brings people together through a shared appreciation of cuisine. People take advantage of the opportunity to share the supper, which is offered by a variety of restaurants.

It is believed that Eddy Lainsesse inadvertently invented poutine. He was a frequent patron of the restaurant Le Lutin Qui Rit. The restaurant was located in the Quebec municipality of Warwick, Arthabaska County. The city was recognised for its squeaking cheese curds. The restaurant owner’s response to Lainsesse’s request to add cheese curds to his french fries was “a va faire une maudite poutine,” which translates to “That is going to make a terrible mess.”
