The background of National Prosecco Day

National Prosecco Day was created by Riondo Prosecco himself. It was chosen to be on August 13 due to the scheduling of summer, with the intention that prosecco, as a sparkling beverage, would be appropriate to consume in the summer.

In fact, Riondo Prosecco was named the best Prosecco in 2010 and won a gold medal for Minner Vinitaly in 2011. Believe it or not, Terlato Wines legitimately acquired the brand in January of 2016.

Prosecco was named after the Prosecco vine and the Italian village of Prosecco. In addition to the well-known and beloved effervescent wine, it is also produced and sold as a still wine.

The first recorded spelling of prosecco was actually ”Prosecho,” which was used by an Englishman named Fynes Moryson who travelled to northern Italy. In 1593, ”Prosecho” was noted by Moryson as one of Italy’s renowned wines. The production methods were modified and enhanced, and a wine of higher quality was produced.

During the turn of the century, the New York Times reported a sharp increase in global sales of prosecco outside of Italy, assisted by the relatively low price of this high-quality wine. By 2010, a quarter of Italian production was exported to the United Kingdom, where consumption soared. This marked the beginning of a major shift in the wine industry, and prosecco remains one of the most popular wines in the United States.
