Cheesecakes can be traced back to the 5th century B.C., when the ancient Greeks created the first cheesecake. This consisted primarily of cheese that had been pulverised with honey and flour and cooked on an antique griddle.
National Pumpkin Cheesecake Day is observed annually on October 21, and it is arguably our favourite autumn holiday. Every aspect of autumn screams pumpkin—pumpkin pie, Halloween, pumpkin spiced lattes, pumpkin patch dates — and pumpkin cheesecake is yet another method to win the hearts of any American.
Cheesecakes can be traced back to the 5th century B.C., when the ancient Greeks created the first cheesecake. This consisted primarily of cheese that had been pulverised with honey and flour and cooked on an antique griddle. It was known as the ‘plakous’, which means ‘flat bulk’.
The cheesecake was then exalted in late mediaeval England, where a tart-like pastry base was introduced. It swiftly spread throughout the region. Due to its prominence in England, cheesecake quickly spread to the American colonies. Cheesecake bakers in America began experimenting with a variety of currants and spices, but when cream cheese was introduced, the American cheesecake genuinely took on a new form. The addition of cream cheese rendered the base creamier and more robust than ever before. In the 1930s, when Arnold Reuben (the inventor of the Reuben sandwich) introduced the ‘New York cheesecake’ to the city, this new and improved cheesecake became a sensation.
Along the way, bakers experimented with an endless variety of flavours and toppings, including blueberry, strawberry, and chocolate, and the pumpkin cheesecake was created. The pumpkin cheesecake went on to win hearts and acquire popularity to the point where cheesecake lovers proclaimed October 21 as National Pumpkin Cheesecake Day in 2011, and it has been celebrated annually since then.
