After being approved for commercial production in 1960, farmers began cultivating this variety.

Rainier cherries are members of the Prunus genus and are descended from the wild cherry, Prunus avium. These commodities are temperamental and susceptible to weather changes such as high temperatures, rain, and strong winds.

Farmers are forced to erect netting to prevent the consumption of Rainier cherries by birds, which pose a threat to their livelihood. Even after they are harvested from the trees, the cherries are handled with the uttermost care. Immediately following extraction, the fruit is hydro-cooled to preserve its freshness. Rainier cherries are considerably more expensive than red cherries. Even though the price remains high, people are willing to spend extra money to appreciate the fruit’s sweetness and nutritional value.
