National Rainier Cherry Day's origins and history are mainly unknown. In 1952, Dr. Harold W. Fogle, a researcher at Washington State University, bred the Bing and Van cherry varieties to create the one-of-a-kind Rainier cherry.

National Rainier Cherry Day is observed on July 11 in the United States. The holiday honours one of the nation’s most popular summer fruits. The day is also the zenith of the Rainier cherry harvest for Washington’s cultivators. Washington produces some of the nation’s greatest quantities of Rainier cherries. Cherries of the Rainier variety are golden yellow with tender, creamy-yellow flesh and a crimson blush. In addition, they have a small brown kernel. Cherries from Rainier have a high sugar content and are categorised as premium produce. These plums are rich in vitamin, mineral, and potassium content.

The background of National Rainier Cherry Day

National Rainier Cherry Day’s origins and history are mainly unknown. In 1952, Dr. Harold W. Fogle, a researcher at Washington State University, bred the Bing and Van cherry varieties to create the one-of-a-kind Rainier cherry. It derives its name from Washington State’s Mount Rainier. After being approved for commercial production in 1960, farmers began cultivating this variety.

Rainier cherries are members of the Prunus genus and are descended from the wild cherry, Prunus avium. July is the peak harvest month for Rainier cherries in Washington, and these cherries only thrive for two months annually. Growing Rainier cherries is a difficult endeavour for producers. Due to its thin and delicate epidermis, the fruit is highly susceptible to bruising. Hand-harvested Rainier cherries are placed in tiny sacks or lugs to minimise contact with the fruit. These commodities are temperamental and susceptible to weather changes such as high temperatures, rain, and strong winds.

Farmers are forced to erect netting to prevent the consumption of Rainier cherries by birds, which pose a threat to their livelihood. Even after they are harvested from the trees, the cherries are handled with the uttermost care. Immediately following extraction, the fruit is hydro-cooled to preserve its freshness. Rainier cherries are considerably more expensive than red cherries. Even though the price remains high, people are willing to spend extra money to appreciate the fruit’s sweetness and nutritional value.
